Reading Reflection No. 2

How To Fail At Almost Everything And Still Win Big by Scott Adams

The general theme of this book was how failing is not the end. You can always have a positive outcome come out of a failure, as long as you don't let the failures bring you down deep enough for you to give up. I think it is important to remember that it takes time to be successful, and that failure builds character. Without failure, you can learn from your mistakes. You should always keep trying. These are some ways that this book connected with what I have learned from this class. I have learned to be organized and structured and to find something and run with it. That is what Adams has done in his many ventures. While it took him a while to become successful, he still made it. We should all take notes from him. If I could design an exercise for this class based on the book, it would be to make a system, not a goal. This concept also was my 'aha' moment from the book. I realized that goals can be scary, which is okay, but sometimes they can be depressing. They are in the future, and you are living now. If you make a system, you don't have the potential to fail every day, but you have a system of what you should do, and if you don't do it then it's okay. In this course I think it would be cool to instead of making goals, make a system for yourself and what your aspirations are. My whole life, I always have been told to make goals, so hearing another perspective, really opened my eyes. With systems, there is less pressure on individuals and I believe that will pay off in the long run.

  1. Remi,

Thank you for sharing your impressions on Scott Adam’s book. I did not read the book, but after reading your post I can see how the theme of the book aligns with the content of this class. A universal truth about successful entrepreneurs is that most failed numerous times before hitting the jackpot. My recommendation for your post would be to add more depth to your conclusions, perhaps by making specific references to the text. I am also curious on your idea of creating a system for the class instead of a goal, you could also add more details on how the system would play in the class’ context. Thanks again for your insights and looking forward your third book review.

  2. Remi,

The book was definitely one that I would read again in a heart beat. I too read this book for my Reading Reflection as well. I completely agree that this book definitely aligns with the course and everything entrepreneurship stands for. It's important to remember that not every entrepreneur is gifted success at every turn. If I was to make one suggestion for your post. I would love to hear more about your idea for the course. I think the framework for that is there, just could use some more detail.

  3. Remi,
I read the same book and found it very intriguing. I agree with you that most success stories start with failure. No one can become successful with out first learning from their mistakes. I thought the book did a great job of showing people thats its never too late to follow their dreams.
